This is due to secretion of a hormone which is secreted directly into the blood I.e ADRENALINE. The target organ on which it acts is the heart that is why the breathing rate increases because of the contractions of the diaphragm and the rib muscles resulting in faster and deeper breathing rate in the athlete ;-)

When the athlete runs in the race, his body needs more energy . In order to get extra energy, the Athens breathes faster. Because more oxygen is supplied to our cells. It seed us the breakdown of food and more energy is released.
