An atom of an element react with other to form
molecule. They react so that they may become stable.
They can gain stability only when they have 8 electrons in their outermost shell(2 electrons if first shell is the last shell).
For acquiring this configuration one atom may loose, gain or share electrons.

e.g CaO
In the outermost shell of calcium has 2 electrons. so it will loose all the 2 electrons to become stable.
Oxygen has 6 electrons in its outermost shell so it will gain those 2 electro s from calcium and hence they will form a stable molecule.
