Why does an exposed moist piece of bread get covered with a cottony growth?

it is due to the growth fungus , fungus require moist environment to grow

Answer:

moisture in the bread allows the decaying action of the fungus on it and they spread very fast in it due to a faster rate of reproduction in fungus due to spores . then it is commonly called bread mould.
