he has low self-esteem, and/or his ideas about self-worth come from fitting himself to a gender role, he can. People lose their sense of self for all kinds of reasons, some of them silly.
It has been my observation that people whose sense of identity and value come from the things they do or the money they make tend to have extremely fragile senses of self. I think it's generally wise, and often a source of greater happiness, to build an identity on something more resilient, that starts with who you are rather than what you do. What you do can change without notice--a layoff, disability, a corporate merger, a company bankruptcy, and wham! What you do changes and it's not your fault. If your self-worth is built on what you do, it will always be possible for other people to destroy you, sometimes without even knowing you.
