An iron nail is small and its bottom is narrower than its head . So it cannot displace water equal to its weight. So it sinks. An iron ship is very big and is hollow at the bottom. It can displace water equal to its weight. So it floats.

the ship does not sink because it is able to replace water equal to its weight but the nail cannot do so
