why does an object sink in water

Pls find the answer below:

A object used to sink in water when its density is more than that of water. If the object's density is less than that of water than it will float.

For example: When you throw a stone in the water, the stone sinks due to its heavy density than of water. But, when you throw a small piece of wood it will float on the surface of the water, indicating that it's lighter than water.!
