Why does anaerobic respiration take place in muscle cells?

Due to the shortage of oxygen, your body breaks down glucose and phosphates stored in your muscles for energy. The byproduct is lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. Due to lactic acid buildup, your muscles can only sustain anaerobic respiration for short periods of time

our muscle cellls without help of oxygen try to break food  this produces very little energy & by products such as lactic acid
