why does aqua regia dissolves noble metals ?

The hydrochloric acid then provides an easily available source of Cl- chloride ions to take up the Au3+ ions and form chloroaurate ions (AuCl4-). Once the Au3+ ions are depleted, the nitric acid can make more until all the gold is dissolved. All the Group II metals liberate hydrogen with water except Be.
