Why does atomic number decrease by 2 and the mass number by 4 during alpha emmision?

An alpha particle is made up of two protons and two neutrons so when the alpha particle leaves atomic number will decrease by 2 because of the two protons and atomic mass will decrease by 4 because of the two protons and two neutrons
