Why does Bassanio ask Antonio not to sign the bond?what light does it throws on his character?

Since, Bassanio was aware of Shylock's hatred for Antonio . He thought that it was Shylock's trick to take his revenge from Antonio by cutting a pound of flesh from his body here called as 'merry spot' . This shows that Bassanio is Antonio's a friend in need who doesn't want to sacrifice his friend's life for his own sake...
