It is because bees sting contains an acid which causes pain and irritation. Akali or a slight base could be applied to neutralize the acid.

the bee sting have formic acid in it which is also called methanoic acid .
but it has the biological reason o pain .
the bee sting has  melittin and apamin in it which are present in bee venom cause of irritation are not acids it is the bee  venom
