bleaching powder is calcium oxychloride.its formula is CaOCl^2. it is also called chloride of lime.
bleaching powder smelld strongly of chlorine because it reacts with CO^2 from the atmosphere to produce chlorine & calcium carbonate.

CaOCl^2 + CO^2 -------- CaCO^3 + Cl^2
