There are mainly 3 reasons that carbon forms a large number of compounds and those reasons are listed below :-

Catenation =  according to this property , carbon has the specialty to self link with C-atoms through covalent bond and hence it can form different types of compounds and those compounds may be straight / branded .


Size = size of carbon is small , so it tendency to form double and triple bonds .


Tetra Valnecy = carbon has 4 electrons in it’s outermost she’ll , i.e it’s valency is 4 and it can pair with 4 other elements.
