Why does carbon differ from the rest of the members of it's group?

Carbon has a unique property of tetravalency i.e. it has 4 valance electrons and has another property of catenation i.e. it can remarkably bond with itself to form large compounds while rest of the members do not possess catenation like carbon and hence they became unstable when they bond with themselves...
