Why does carbon form compound by co-voilent bonding?

Because carbon have tetra valency. It has 4 valence electrons. It has equal tendency to either lose or gain electrons. But in case of gaining and losing it needed a large amount of energy. So it form covalent bond by sharing it's valence electrons.
