the transfer of electrons depends on the number of electrons. whether the electrons will be received or or donated is dependent on which is the less in number. for carbon the valency is 4 therefore the probability of donating and receiving electrons is equal. therefore sharing of electrons is most favourable for carbon and forms covalent bond.
