It cannot give away four electrons as the charge difference between protons and electrons would be too high. That's the same reason why any element cannot completely transfer 4 electrons to carbon to form an electrovalent compound. But by covalent bonding, since they can share electrons, the charge difference is not much and that's why carbon compounds are formed mainly by covalent bonding.
