why does carbon forms covalent compound

As carbon is tetravalent i.e.it has 4 electrons in the last shell . so it would require high amount of energy to loose or take electron .i.e. why it makes a covalent bond.

as carbon is a non metal and has a electronegativity of around 2.55 thus it forms covalent compound with about all the elements of the periodic table
