Caste system has been well entrenched in Indian society from time immemorial and has brought about worst kind discrimination and exclusion of the out caste group who were subjected to inhuman treatment and injustice. Though number of changes have come about in Independent India like :

1. The Constitution of India provided in principle legal and political equality to everybody irrespective of their caste.

2. Article 17 of the constitution banned untouchability, even though it continue exist in some parts of rural India.

3. Government policy of reservation has helped in enhancing the education and economic status of the Schedule caste and Schedule Tribe.

But despite, the above efforts, still there is a long way to go as in rural areas caste based identities are still prevalent.

Caste today has become controversial and is exploited for political gains by politicians to win elections. Likewise, government policy of reservation has been criticized and questioned and has led to caste based conflicts in the society.

One of the most important movements against caste system in colonial time was led by B.R Ambedkar who started temple entry movement in 1927 to fight against the caste prejudices.
