Why does Cherrapunji receive heavier rainfall than Shillong?

Explanation:

Cherrapunji/ Mawsynram lies on the windward side of the Khasi hills and receives rainfall from the 'V.W. Monsoon Bay of Bengal 'branch while Shillong / Dispur / Guwahati lie on the leeward side of the Khasi hills and so they receive less rainfall being in the Rain Shadow area.

As you know cherrapunji is situated in south part of meghalaga whereas shilong is on north. so the wind carrying the rain which orginates from bay of bengal travels upwards towards meghalaya is surrounded by three hills namely khasi,garo and jayantia hills.so the winds enter meghalaya it first visot cherrapunji and because of this three hills most of wind carrying moisture gets trapped inside and because of which they burst in in cherrapunji making it wettest place on earth.
