Why does Coleridge say that ice was green as emerald?

Because he was talking about icebergs and icebergs are often colored in shades of blue and green. The vivid tones and translucent nature do look like gem stones. Here is even an account of discovering a green iceberg, coincidentally, the boat discovering it was named The Albatross.
