There are different chemical substances which are highly reactive with water.That's why they absorb the surrounding's atmospheric water molecules become slimy.
These chemical substances are known as the hygroscopic substances.
Similarly, common salt is also a hygroscopic substance and that's why it becomes wet in the rainy season.
