Same in earth's case as we go down overlying weight(also pressure) increases thus density increases. Dense material sank to the center, while the lighter material created the crust. That is why Density increases towards the center of the earth.

The core of the earth is composed mostly of heavy metals like Iron and Nickle this is because they are denser than the materials that make up the crust and mantle like silicon, oxygen and carbon.  The earth has had about 4 billion years for the heavy metals to sink to the bottom.
