diamonds are cut so that a light ray falling on the diamond is reflected multiple times inside the diamond and therefore sends light out in all direction.

Critical angle for diamond is only 24 degree. Moreover, diamonds are cut at very sharp angle, making a number of refractive surfaces. When a ray of light enters a diamond, it suffers a series of total internal reflection because of the very small value of the critical angle. Thus, the ray in a way gets trapped within the diamond for sometime. It is this trap light energy, which makes it sparkle.
