why does dissolved co2 in water make it slightly acidic

When CO2 dissolves in water it forms carbonic acid: H2CO3. This compound has a higher Ka value ~ 10^-3 than water. This means that the H2CO3 is more likely to dissociate, and produce H+ ions in solution. This makes the pH go down and therefore more acidic.
