Why does dry hcl gas not changes the colour of blue litmus to red litmus paper, but in presence of water hcl has turns blue litmus into red litmus in this reaction what is the role of water ?

Answer:

In presence of water , HCl dissociate into H+ and Cl- ions , so in presence of water HCl changes blue litmus into red .
