Why does electronegativity increase across a period and decrease down a group?

across a period size of atom decreases...this causes greater attraction of nucleus toward outer orbitals,,, therefore it is difficult to remove electron from that atom...as a result of which it attracts more electron.

The electronegativity increases as we go down the grp coz the number of shells increases the the protons tendency to hold electron decreases hence it becomes more electronegative and losses electron easily refer to the attached material
