Because they believe that happiness lies in things, living things included, they want to own and control more and more things. Money comes handy in such a pursuit.
But, they can't spend all the money they gather. Now why should they hoard that money? To take care of unpredictable events to come. So it is sort of a insurance policy.
But there is a limit to insurance cover. Why do they amass wealth beyond that limit? Because of greed. Beyond a limit, wealth generates more wealth and they don't want to stop that economic process due to greed.
I have not seen anybody accumulating wealth with a purpose of philanthropy, though there are few examples of wealthy people spending some of their wealth, after their retirement, for a social cause.
