The calendar we follow now was invented by the Romans. According to their calendar, the year had 366 days and all the months alternately had 30 and 31 days. However Augustus named the month August after himself and wanted it to have 31 days. He therefore took one day from February and added it to August. Not to be left behind, Julius Caesar took one more day from February and added to July, the month named after him. Therefore February has 28 days.

The second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, decided to make the calendar more accurate by syncing it up with the actual lunar year—which is about 354 days long. Numa tacked on two months—January and February—after December to account for the new days. The new months each had 28 days.
