Why does foetus respire but not breathe?

The foetus takes in Oxygen and releases Carbon dioxide which can be stated as breathing whereas it does not respire as during respiration breaking of molecules to release energy takes place but the foetus already gets its part of nutrients from the mother through the placenta so it does not respire but just breathes.
