When a glass vessel falls from a height on a hard floor,it comes to rest almost instantaneously so the floor exerts a large force on the vessel and it breaks. But if it falls on a carpet ,the time duration in which the vessel comes to rest, increases and so the carpet exerts a less force on the vessel and it does not break..

It is dependent on the force which acts on the surface. Here we getting the example of Newton's third law of force or the action-reaction force. Glass is a solid as well hard substance while hard floor is also a solid substance without any vacuum. So, while the glass vessel is falling on a hard floor then just on that moment it is experiencing the same amount of force by which it had fallen on the floor so, it is getting break. While carpet has so any pores over it so, it contains air and while the glass vessel is falling on it then at first it is giving pressure on the air particles and the air particles get displaced and moves out, as a result the force gets reduced and also experiencing the reaction force in later. So, the glass vessel is not breaking.
