Why does HCl in gas form not react with dry litmus paper but when litmus is dipped in water and then brought near to HCl gas it reacts and change its color?

Explanation:

HCL doesn't react with dry litmus paper as H+(hydronium ions) are absent.Whereas H+ ions are present in wet litmus paper.hence the above observations are found.
