Because he the glum faced man who was the marshal(policeman) wanted to save Mr.Easton from embarrassment in front of his old friend Miss Fairchild. In order to save Mr.Easton from any embarrassment the glum faced man (police man) said tht he is the prisoner And Mr. Easton is the policeman. Therefore the glum faced man says that hewss been taken by Mr. Easton to Leavenworth prison for counterfeiting for 7 years but actually the story was opposite . Mr. Easton was being taken to prison for counterfeiting for 7years . By glum faced man or the policeman.
