Why does helen say people would have believed in hallocks's ghost if they had looked like her?

The given lines where spoken by Helen when John said that " The ghosts in his stories didn't look a bit like her " . Helen's appearance was that of a living person . She looked very real . To this Helen replied " That if his ghost looked like her , people would not have believed in them .."
