atomic no. of hydrogen is 1. to become stable it can loose or gain one electron.
if it looses the electron it is liberated to anode(-) and if it gains one electron it will become stable by duplet rule and will liberate to cathode(+)

it is because the valence electrons of H are 1.if it loses 1 electron then there will be no electrons in outershell.so it gain one electron and become stable and gets liberated at cathode
