Why does i2 (iodine) has a oxidation number of 0?

oxidation no. generates when there is any distortion in electron cloud.
When element binds with another of high electronegativity then the bounded atom have to loose it's electron and gets +ve charge or oxidation no. and vice- versa.
In case of I2 (iodine) both element are same hence both have same electronegativity hence will not loose or gain any shared electron so, oxidation no. will be zero.
