why does ice  float on water? I know it is less denser, but it is only made of water, so how is it less denser than water?

When water is condensed its density decreases.The density of ice is 0.917 g/cm³ whereas the density of water is 1.02 g/cm³.So ice floats on water.

ice have less mass per unit volume , and it is less dense then the water because when water solidify it becomes lighter , after solidifiying it becomes 9% less denser then its liquid state , and also ice freezes from top to botom  that is why if we put water in ice tray to solidify it first freeze on the top , to test this after 15 minutes take the tray out and press it on center you will find that the top layer freezed but inside it there is still water .
