As any other liquid ,water also contracts on cooling but only upto 4° C . Cooling water after 4°C and upto 0°C results in expansion of water . This unusual behavior of water is known as anomalous expansion of water.
As we know , density in inversely proportional to volume , the volume of ice at 0°C becomes more than water thus reducing its density. This results ice to float on water.
