The international date line follows a zigzag path because if it passes in a straight line, then there would be alot of confusion as the line would be passing through a landmass (more specifically, a country).
It will be like if you lived on one side of the landmass and and your friend lives on the another side and if you ever happen to visit him, there would be a drastic time difference.
