Iodine has a low melting point because of it's large size. I2 or iodine molecule has two iodine atoms bonded together. Since the size is very large, bonds are weak and melt under low temperature.

Due to its huge size, iodine has a low melting point.

Iodine:

  • The thyroid uses an element called iodine.
  • Iodine must be ingested because it cannot be produced by humans.
  • Salt and some foods both contain it as an ingredient.
  • Iodine can destroy germs, fungi, and other microbes like amoebas in addition to lowering thyroid hormone.
  • The maintenance of healthy thyroid function is iodine's primary function.
  • It aids in controlling the thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine synthesis of the thyroid hormones (T3).

Why does Iodine have a low melting point?

  • Since the weak intermolecular interactions in iodine may be broken with less energy than those in sodium iodide, iodine has a lower melting point.
