why does it happen ? The wall of a dam is broad at its base

A dam is thicket of broad at its base than at top beacuse pressure of water is higher near the base of the dam than its top.

Making dams thicker will not allow the water to break its base.

Also, a general fact is that at depth of 1000m, pressure due to water is about 100 times greater than the atmospheric pressure.

Also, that is why deep sea-diver wear specially designed suit to counter such high pressure.
