Hi friend,
In the given story, Jack feels that he has been caught in an ugly middle position. He made efforts to make Jo fall asleep but it proved quite fatiguing because she kept on interrupting him, asking for clarifications, pointing errors and suggesting alternatives. So he extended the story but the result of the extension to the story proved unfruitful and unpleasant for Jo, Jack and Clare.
As Jo wanted him to change the ending of the story, Clare complained that he had told a long story.
Hope it helps!
