(a)Jim brings the package to Dr. Livesy because he trusts him and wants to leave the packet with him in order to keep it safe. The packet contained a book in which was written an accounting of the treasure, as well as a map of where the treasure was hidden.
(b)Jim headed on his own because he knew that his partners won't allow himself to go and he wanted to go to Ben Gunn's boat that's why he left his partner alone and he also didn't wanted to risk his partner's life, although he knew it was against his wishes. His rationale of escaping was to get to Ben Gunn's boat.
