1. There is no specific reason given behind Juliette’s intention behind selling the villa. However, the possible reason might be change of place. She might have seen a better place and house to live in. We come to this conclusion from the fact that she wanted to sell it at any price. She said, ‘Oh! I'm fed up with the place.’
There was no financial reason behind the decision. Though she talks of ‘hard times ‘and ‘bad business’, but this she talks about the economy and market. Her own financial condition is good. We come to know about it when she rejects her maid’s offer to work in a film for eight hundred francs. She refuses to accept the offer saying: ‘But how kind of you. ... Thank God I'm not quite so hard up as that yet!’
2.The maid in the drama is quite an ambitious and talented woman. She has a yearning to become as famous as Greta Garbo. Since she is paid 400 francs per month by Juliette, she manages to find work as minor actor at JoinVille Studio for which she will be paid hundred francs a morning. She is quite rudely straightforward. She does not hesitate telling her mistress that she has a funny and comical face. She often offers to get Juliette a role in the movie she is acting in.3. Jeanne is a practical lady indeed. She insists on her husband to buy the villa as she feels her parents might start living in it comfortably. When Gaston, her husband shows no willingness to buy it, she accepts his decision without much reaction and fuss.
4.Gaston was a street-smart, clever, pragmatical Frenchman, who knew the art of seizing any opportunity that came his way. He had very well-defined approach to life. As he entered the villa on his wife's request, to just see it, he categorically told her he would not buy it. However, when Jeanne was having a look at the first floor of the villa, Mrs Al smith, the conceited American lady who considered the French to be an inferior race, was outsmarted by insightful Gaston. Not only he managed to buy the villa for the sake of his wife's happiness, but also succeeded in securing a huge profit out of the deal for himself. He was very smart indeed!
5. She wanted to buy it as she needed the land on which the villa was built. She was in the film-making industry. Paramount company was making a film in Joinville. She had come all the way from America. Her intention was to have the villa demolished and then have a bungalow in its place.
