Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was an Indian social reformer and activist whose main aim was to eradicate discrimination based on caste and create an equal society where there will no caste. He mainly worked towards eliminating untouchability and caste system, liberation and empowerment of women and bringing about reforms in Hindu life. He formed the Satyashodhak Samaj on 24 September 1873 to focus on the rights of neglected groups like women, Shudras and Dalits. Hence he occupies an important position among social reformers.
