because lack of oxygen results in formation of lactic acid due to anaerobic respiration in muscles. This lactic acid causes cramps

lack of oxygen causes anaerobic respiration so instead of oxygen lactic acid is produced (as resultant of anaerobic respiration is lactic acid).this causes pain .
