Reason for hardening of leather after tanning process.
- Tanning is the process in which the hide of the animal is converted into leather by changing the structure of the protein present in the hide.
- This process makes the leather progressively solid and resistant to decomposition.
- Tanin the chemical used in process contains a negatively charged colloidal particle whereas leather has a positively charged colloidal particle.
- When the leather is soaked in tannin, due to the difference in charges, coagulation occurs.
- This coagulation leads to the hardening of the leather after tanning process.
