Light travels faster because sound needs air to travel and light travels without any help

Sound and light are both forms of energy. Both are waves. There are differences in how they are created and propagated.

Sound waves are created by mechanical vibrations of particles of a medium (solid , liquid or gas). The speed with which matter can move or vibrate is limited. This is due to physical and chemical properties and limitations. So sound travels at 340 m/s in air. It also travels at 1500 m/s or more inside steel.

Light is an electromagnetic radiation form of energy. It consists of only electric and magnetic field. It is basically caused by moving electrons inside atoms. Electrons spin and revolve around nucleus at very very high speeds. Electrons change their positions at very very high frequency. So the radiations travel at speed of 3* 10^8 m/s in vacuum.

Difference is that sound waves are caused by macro particles. Light is created by micro (nano or even smaller ) particles.
