Calcium hydroxide is sparingly soluble in water producing an alkaline solution known as limewater. When carbon dioxide gas is passed through or over limewater, it turns milky due to the formation of calcium carbonate. Lime reacts with acidic gases like sulfur dioxide

Lime water is actually Ca(OH)2 . When it reacts withCO2 insoluble CaCO3 is formed which turns solutionmilky. When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water it turns milky due to the formation of waterinsoluble precipitate CaCO3. Still if excess of CO2 is passed it forms water soluble Calcium bicarbonate .

2Ca(CO3) + 2H2O + 2CO2 -> 2Ca(HCO3)2.
