littoral forests refers to trees which grow at shore region.In such regions soil is accumulated with salty and can't be aerated as normal soils..
so trees of such area to obtain the requirements,roots shows negative geotropism i.e grow upwards..
hence such roots are called as aerial roots and they are adventitious in nature...

Aerial roots are roots above the ground. They are almost always adventitious. They are found in diverse plant species, including epiphytes such as orchids, tropical coastal swamp trees such as mangroves, the resourceful banyantrees, the warm-temperate rainforest rātā (Metrosideros robusta) and pōhutukawa (M. excelsa) trees of New Zealand and vines such as Common Ivy (Hedera helix) and poison ivy(Toxicodendron radicans).
